Ghana – The caravan continues its march from Central Africa to Benin
The 5th West African Caravan – Coastal Route, on its way to the World Social Forum 2026 in Cotonou, concluded its stage in Ghana with a stop in the coastal community of Agavedzi. This final stop was marked by a community dialogue focusing on the impacts of climate change and coastal erosion, two major challenges affecting this part of Ghana’s coastline.
Upon their arrival, the caravan participants received a warm welcome from the local population. Singing, traditional dances, and cultural performances reflected the strong commitment of the community to the environmental and social issues championed by the Caravan.
The dialogue brought together community leaders, civil society organizations, young people, women, and members of the Caravan. Discussions highlighted the devastating effects of coastal erosion and rising sea levels on homes, farmland, fishing activities, and the livelihoods of local communities.
Participants emphasized the urgent need for a collective response to the climate crisis, calling for stronger public policies, better protection of coastal areas, and greater support for communities already suffering the impacts of climate change. They also stressed the importance of promoting locally driven solutions based on citizen participation, climate justice, and ecosystem protection.
This gathering reinforced the central message of the West African Caravan: to amplify the voices of grassroots communities and promote sustainable alternatives for development that respect both the environment and the rights of peoples.
Following this meaningful and inspiring stage, the caravan is now heading to Togo, where it will continue engaging with civil society organizations and local communities before joining the final destination in Cotonou for the World Social Forum 2026.
